Yosemite is the most famous climbing destination in the United States, and for many climbers, it is the pinnacle of their upward career. Half Dome and El Capitan have been captivating climbers for decades. Climbing legends and leaders in the sport such as Royal Robbins, Warren Harding, Jim Bridwell and Alex Honnold have all made names for themselves on the walls of Yosemite. Camp 4, where climbers have pitched their tents since the 1950s, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its importance in the sport of rock climbing. It is difficult to imagine another place so closely associated with the sport of climbing.
Rock climbing in the park is still as popular as ever in Yosemite. On any given day, you can see climbers clinging to El Capitan’s face or tuning in at the base. In June 2017, Alex Honnold made history by completing El Capitan’s first solo free climb.
